Surface Attack Instructions
Intent — The intent of the low altitude phase of training is to build on the SUPT student’s basic navigational skills by exposing the IFF pilot to the low altitude tactical navigation environment and airspeeds.
Instrument Training — See paragraph 5-2 for instrument approach requirements.
Formation Training — L-1 and L-2 may be flown two-ship to introduce/practice low altitude tactical formation based on the student’s ability and follow-on training requirements. However, the emphasis will remain on low altitude AHC/navigation.
Mission SPINS
A. Low Altitude Advanced Handling — The vertical awareness training will consist of shallow slice maneuvers and nose-low transitions completed above 1,000 feet AGL.
B. Low-level Routes
(1) Low-level routes will be planned and flown at 500 feet above ground level (AGL) and tactical airspeeds
to the maximum extent possible.
(2) Students should not fly the same low-level route more than once. A low altitude MOA is an acceptable
alternative to using a different route.
